Free chat rooms, open right now

Two chat rooms run around the clock. Both are free, both are anonymous, and you can jump from one to the other in a single tap.

Anonymous chat with strangers, your way

No real name, no email, no phone number. You get a nickname and decide how you want to meet people.

You choose who to talk to

On roulette sites you get one random stranger and either of you can skip. In a chat room you read along first, then message the people you actually want to talk to. Want the random kind too? One-on-one random chat is one tap away.

No waiting screen

There is always a conversation going, so you never sit staring at “looking for a partner”.

Text first, at your own pace

Nobody is pointing a camera at you. Online chat starts with words, and photos, voice notes or a video call only happen when you decide.

How to start chatting with strangers

  1. Open the chat

Tap Start chatting. The room opens in your browser on any phone, tablet or computer. There is no app to install and no form to fill in.

  2. Take a name

You are given a random name the moment you arrive. Keep it, or change it to something that sounds more like you.

  3. Say something real

Reply to what someone just said in the room, or tap a name to start a private chat with that one person.

What you can do in the chat

It looks simple, but there is a lot packed in once you start using it.

Private chats in tabs

Keep the room open and several one-on-one conversations beside it, each in its own tab. Your recent chats stay listed so you can find people again.

Video calls

Tap the camera icon next to someone’s name to call them on video. They have to accept first, so nobody can call you out of nowhere.

Voice messages

Hold the mic and talk for up to five minutes. Handy when typing is too slow, or when your accent says more than your spelling.

Photos, GIFs and emojis

Share a picture straight from your phone, drop a GIF from the built-in library, or answer with an emoji.

Replies and reactions

Quote the exact message you are answering so a busy room can follow along, and react with like, love or sad.

Edit and delete

Fix a typo after you hit send, or delete a message you wish you hadn’t sent.

Who is online

A green dot shows who is in the chat right now, and you can search the user list by name.

Make it yours

Pick a text colour, add a profile picture with a free account, mute the sounds when you are somewhere quiet, and paste YouTube links that play inside the chat.

Moderators and spam reports

Moderators sit in the rooms every day, and anyone can report a spam message. Ads, links and hate speech get removed.

A free Omegle alternative that is still here

TalkWithStranger started in 2016 because talking to someone new shouldn’t mean handing over your phone number or building a profile first. Since then people from more than 190 countries have used it to kill a boring night, practise their English, get something off their chest, or just find out what time it is on the other side of the world.

When Omegle shut down in November 2023, a lot of its regulars went looking for an Omegle alternative and ended up here: free, anonymous, no signup, with text, voice and video. Plenty of them stayed for the chat rooms. You get to see who is around, there is no pressure to perform for a webcam, and the people you get on with are still there tomorrow.

The rooms on this page are the group side of TalkWithStranger. If you want one stranger all to yourself, the main site has one-on-one text chat, voice calls and random video chat, all free. Over there you can now save the people you hit it off with as friends, build a daily streak with them, and challenge them to Truth or Dare or a Hangman Race without leaving the conversation.

Free online chat without an app

Most chat apps want an install, a phone number and your contacts before you can say a word. This free online chat doesn’t. It runs in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Samsung Internet, and it works the same on a cheap Android phone as on a laptop.

Guests can chat online straight away. A free account is optional and only adds a few extras, like your own profile picture and the option to block private messages from people you don’t know. Either way you can leave whenever you like, and nobody gets your email.

How to get replies in a busy chat room

The regulars see the same mistakes every day. These few habits get you noticed.

  • Answer something. “Hi” gets lost in a fast room. Reply to a message that caught your eye, and the person who wrote it will usually answer.
  • Skip “m or f?” Asking everyone’s gender as an opener reads like spam, and most people simply ignore it.
  • Give people something to work with. Mention the film you just watched, the match you are following or the exam you are avoiding. People answer details, not “hru”.
  • Move to private chat when it clicks. If the two of you keep going back and forth, tap their name and carry on in private.
  • Read the room. Desi Connect is loud and quick. World Chat drifts between topics. Join in with what is already happening before starting something new.

Staying safe while you chat

Keep it anonymous

Your nickname is all anyone needs. Don’t share your full name, number, address, school or workplace, however friendly the chat gets.

Spot the spammers

Anyone who asks you to add them on another app, sends a link straight away or asks for money is almost always a spammer. Ignore and report them.

You can always leave

You never owe a stranger a reply. Close the private chat, carry on in the room, or come back another day.

Questions people ask

Is the chat anonymous?

Yes. You get a random nickname, and nobody asks for your real name, email or phone number. What you share is up to you.

Is it really free?

Yes. The rooms, private messages, photos and voice notes cost nothing, and nothing is locked behind a paywall.

Do I have to sign up?

No. You get a random name the moment the chat opens, and you can change it to anything you like. An account is optional and only needed if you want your own profile picture or to block messages from people you don't know. So it is a free chat without registration from your very first message.

What is a general chat room?

A general chat room has no fixed topic: people drop in, talk about whatever is on their mind and drift from cricket to music to homework in ten minutes. World Chat is ours. It is open all day, mostly in English, and anyone can join with just a nickname.

Where can I talk to strangers online for free?

Right here, in a few ways. Join World Chat or Desi Connect on this page for a live group chat, get matched with one random stranger for a private text chat on talkwithstranger.com, or use Call Strangers for a random voice call. None of them cost anything or ask for an email.

Who will I meet in the chat rooms?

World Chat is the big room where people from every country hang out, mostly in English. Desi Connect is for Hindi, Urdu and Hinglish speakers. You can talk to the whole room or tap a name to chat with one person in private.

Is it a good Omegle alternative?

If you liked talking to random people on Omegle, yes. Omegle closed in 2023; TalkWithStranger has been running since 2016, and here you choose who to talk to instead of being thrown at a random stranger.

Can I share pictures or send voice messages?

Yes. Use the picture button to share photos and the mic button to record a short voice note. GIFs and emojis work too.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in any modern browser on Android or iPhone. There is nothing to download.

Is there a random chat or video chat too?

Yes. Besides these chat rooms, TalkWithStranger has one-on-one random text chat, random video chat and voice calls with strangers on talkwithstranger.com. All of them are free.

Is this a safe website to talk to strangers?

It is one of the safer ones, because of how it is run. Moderators are in the rooms every day, anyone can report a spam message, and ads, links and hate speech are removed. You never have to share an email or phone number, and with a free account you can block private messages from people you don't know.

How do I stay safe chatting with strangers?

Keep your real name, number, address and social accounts to yourself, and never send money. If someone bothers you, stop replying and leave the chat. The moderators mute and remove people who break the room rules.
