About these free chat rooms

You are in the public chat rooms of TalkWithStranger. There are two: 🌎 World Chat, the main room where people from everywhere talk mostly in English, and 🌶 Desi Connect, which is for Hindi, Urdu and Hinglish. Switch between them with the tabs at the top of the chat. Both are free chat rooms with no signup and no time limit.

Everything you type in a room is seen by everyone in it. Tap a person's name in the list on the right (on a phone, open the people list) to start a private chat. Only the two of you see that conversation, and it opens in its own tab next to the rooms.

What the buttons do

• Smiley: emojis and GIFs.
• Mic: hold to record a voice message, up to five minutes.
• Picture and paperclip: send a photo or a file from your phone or computer.
• Camera icon next to a name: ask that person for a video call. Nothing starts until they accept.
• Customize: change your nickname, pick a text colour, or turn the sounds off.
• Like under a message: react to it, or reply so the room can see what you are answering.

Chat room rules

The rooms stay friendly because the regulars and moderators look after them. Moderators mute or remove people who break these:

• No spam, ads or links to other apps and sites.
• No hate speech, racism or slurs.
• No harassment. If someone says stop, stop.
• Don't flood the room with the same message or walls of text.
• Keep private details private, yours and everyone else's.

Getting a good conversation going

A busy online chat room moves fast, and a lone "hi" scrolls away in seconds. Reply to something someone actually said, ask about the match or the film everyone is talking about, or share what you are up to. When a back-and-forth starts, take it to a private chat so you can talk without the noise.

Group chat works best when you join in with what is already happening. Desi Connect is quick and loud, World Chat wanders from topic to topic, and both are busiest in the evening in India.

If something isn't working

• Stuck on "Loading the chat": refresh the page. If it keeps happening, try another browser or turn off a VPN.
• Your name changed or got an underscore: someone online already uses that name. Pick a slightly different one in Customize.
• No sound: check Customize, the sounds may be muted.
• Want to block someone: create a free account, then you can block private messages from people you don't know.

Group chat, one-on-one or video: pick your way to talk

These two rooms are the group side of TalkWithStranger. If you came here looking for free chat rooms you can join without signing up, you are in the right place. But sometimes a busy chatroom is not what you want, and TalkWithStranger has a different kind of free online chat for every mood:
